Main-course cookbooks fill the bill

The world is divided into those who love sweets and those who love salty, savory food.

For the latter, here is my totally eclectic list of new cookbooks I’d be happy to find under the Christmas tree.

• I’ve already dog-eared The Paris Cookbook by Patricia Wells (Harper Collins, $30). Experience tells me that recipes from this restaurant critic/cookbook author are always well tested and long on flavor.

This collection offers remarkably simple recipes from chefs and other Parisians — including the taxi driver who provided the secret recipe for his wife’s mussels. The ingredient lists are short and accessible, and recipes are garnished with tips she learned working alongside chefs in their kitchens.
