Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I add my name to a Patricia Wells class wait list?
Please complete the form on the following link to add your name to the wait list for any two classes:  Patricia Wells Class wait list.
  • What is the best way to get to Provence?
From Paris-Charles de Gaulle you can take the TGV (fast train) to Montélimar or Avignon; from there, take a rental car to Vaison-la-Romaine. Or, from Paris (center), take the TGV from Gare de Lyon to Montélimar or Avignon and rent a car.
Click here for additional information on Airports and Trains in Provence.
  • What should I wear?
Paris: While dress is informal, the class does include lunches in two of Paris's best restaurants. You'll want to feel comfortable (i.e. dressed for dining in Paris) while there.
Provence: Casual and comfortable, with appropriate dress for the restaurant meals. Be sure to bring a sweater and/or shawl for those occasional cool evenings outdoors.
  • What will the weather be like when I am there?
Provence: Most days are sunny and even in summer the nights are refreshingly cool. We have many meals outside whenever the weather allows, so please bring a sweater or light jacket. It does rain, of course, and we move all activities inside then. For the truffle class, we're usually favored with sunny days, but that's never a certainty. Even in Provence the winter weather can be cold and blustery.
Paris: A friend likes to say that the bad weather is Paris's best-kept secret. While it's rarely very hot or very cold, it's often cloudy and rain so you should plan to bring a raincoat and an umbrella.

  • For more information about the weather here are several Internet sites:
In English, the CNN site gives five-day forecasts for Marseille, which is in the same region as Vaison and has basically the same weather. The address is
    http://europe.cnn.com/WEATHER/eu/France/MarseilleLFMX.html

Yahoo includes a five-day forecast for Orange, which is even closer to Vaison than Marseille. http://weather.yahoo.com/forecast/FRXX0167_f.html

And in French, the url for France's national weather service is: http://www.meteo.fr/meteonet/index.htm

  • Can you offer any advice on dialing long distance to France?
Yes, we suggest you use the following website for time differences and calling codes: http://www.countrycallingcodes.com/index.htm
  • What are the ages of the other participants?
Our youngest participant so far was 25 and our oldest a very vigorous 79.
  • Is there a minimum age requirement for students?
'At Home with Patricia Wells' classes are designed for adults only, therefore all students must be at least 21 years old.
  • What level of cooking expertise is required?
The programs and menus are suitable for both beginners and more experienced home cooks.
  • How much cooking is involved and what is the daily schedule?
In Provence, we prepare five meals together at home, some casual and easy and some more ambitious. There is a comparable amount of cooking in both the Fitness Week and Wine Week. Please choose below the class that interests you to see a sample menu and class schedule :
  • If I add my name to the waiting list, what are the chances I will get in?
There are occasional cancellations, but by their nature those are completely unpredictable. The length of the waiting list is no indicator of your chances of actually getting into a full class. Flexibility to travel on short notice and luck are more important.
  • Do you offer half-day or day classes in Paris or Provence?
Unfortunately, Patricia's busy schedule does not permit her to offer half-day or day classes in either Paris or Provence.
  • What activities are available for my spouse/partner who is not participating in the classes?
The answer depends on the partner's interest. Some go biking or golfing, some go fishing and others explore the Côtes-du-Rhône vineyards in the region. Others tour nearby sites in Avignon, Aix-en-Provence, the Pont-du-Gard ... And others read, sit in the Vaison cafés, or stay by the pool at their hotel and (or so we're told) talk on their cell phones.
  • Can my (non-participating) spouse/partner come to meals with the group?
A non-participating spouse/partner will be welcome to join the group for the final lunch at Chanteduc, on Friday.
  • What does lodging cost?

Provence: Recommended B&B's and hotels in the area are quite reasonably priced, about 100 € / night at current rates.

Paris: As you know, in Paris the sky is the limit. But there are moderately priced hotels(again, in the 125 € range) and close to the Rue Jacob studio.

  • How can I determine the exchange rate between the dollar and the Euro?
We suggest you visit the following website: http://www.xe.com/ucc/convert.cgi
  • When does the class begin?
Paris: Monday at 10 a.m. at the Rue Jacob studio.
Provence: Sunday at 7 p.m. at Chanteduc for cocktails and dinner.
Truffles: Monday at 7 p.m. at Chanteduc for cocktails and dinner.
  • When does the class end?
    Paris: after lunch on Friday.
    Provence: after lunch on Friday.
    Truffles: after lunch on Friday.
("After lunch" is obviously imprecise, but the lunches tend to be long, generally ending around 2:30 P.M.)
  • How many classes can I enroll in each year?
Due to the popularity of these classes we request that you enroll in only one class per year.
  • What is the smoking policy?
Smoking is not permitted in either the Paris or the Provence classes.
